Broto Roy
Broto Roy was born into a highly musical family in Calcutta, India where his great-grandfather Rajanikanto was one of India's greatest songwriters and his uncle Dilip Roy is currently a popular recording artist. Broto began studying traditional Indian music at the age of 6 with India’s renowned Tabla master, Bidyut Banerjee. In 1998 Broto released his debut album, "American Raga," which has the unique distinction of being played aboard the International Space Station. Broto’s successful U.S. tour in the summer of 2001 was supported by a growing national audience. Mixing traditional Indian rhythms and Indian singing, with elements of modern jazz and rock, Broto’s Quartet played to sold out concerts and rave reviews. More than 20 European shows were added to the tour. In addition to his live concert appearances, Broto Roy is one of the most requested session performers in the United States and has contributed to recordings by artists such as Krishna Bhatt, Roy Chowdhuri, Aashish Khan, Paul Bollenback, Sanjay Mishra, Joey DeFrancesco, Ron Holloway, and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead. Broto Roy is a proud recipient of several grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. Following many concert appearances in America, Europe and India, Broto began a collaboration with Afghan artist, Noor Wodjouatt. Career highlights include concert appearances with Noor Wodjouatt at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts and Washington, D.C.’s prestigious Folk Life Festival.
